Following the acceptance of his honorary degree in Engineering from the University of Bath, Happold Foundation trustee and BuroHappold partner Mike Cook delivered the ACE Lecture ‘Civilizing Engineering – how can Civil Engineering be more Civilizing.’
The ultimate goal of civil engineering is to help civilization work better. Through buildings, infrastructure and cities, they create environments where people can come together and share their lives. In the lecture, Mike bought together the strands of a forty year career in engineering, where he has worked with people such as Ted Happold, Frei Otto, Norman Foster and many others. He looked at how nature could be a powerful guide towards creating buildings that “work well and feel right”. He also talked about how we can now focus our attention on people-centred engineering that can enhance people’s experience and make civilization work better.
