Regions we work in
As a global charity, the Happold Foundation wants to make sure that we can help as many people as possible across our societies. The needs of different regions are diverse and unique, so our aim is to grow the number of people that work with us so we can offer expert support to engineers who in turn help communities worldwide.
United Kingdom
Our work in the UK reaches all corners of the engineering community, from students eager to learn more about the sector to leaders of the industry dedicated to solving the difficulties facing our global society. The Happold Foundation’s projects in the UK include the Class of Your Own programme at schools in Bath and Manchester, and offering Happold Scholarships to support dozens of students. Our Conversations series and workshops give industry leaders the opportunity to tackle key topics in our industry, and our funding help research projects and training programmes get off the ground. I had fantastic support from some excellent engineers whenever I needed it and I learnt far more about engineering than I ever did at university. Tom Newby, Happold Foundation Alumni
Middle East
The Happold Foundation believes that the development cities in the Middle East is a vital part of how the region will grow and evolve. Our projects in the Middle East include the Urban Design Challenge, which gives students the opportunity to work on an urban development project first hand. We focus on supporting problem solving initiatives and working with up and coming young engineers to develop their skills and knowledge. Read more about the Urban Design Challenge
We are proud to be supporting such a worthwhile initiative that engages the young talent of Riyadh in such a positive way. Robert Okpala, Urban Design Challenge
North America
“…the great diversity of people was part of the wonderful experience at BuroHappold.” Marianne Gatti
The built environment sector in North America is a diverse and exciting place to work, and we know how important it is to help new talent to join the industry. Helping to deliver the ACE Mentor program, we offer mentorship and learning opportunities designed to offer students the chance to work with a mentor to get hands on experience of architecture, engineering and construction. We have also supported a number of Happold Scholars in the region. Our trustees in North America host workshops and lectures that focus on specific areas that need engineering input. The current workshop series looks at Wellbeing and Health. Read more about the Futures, Education and Thinking work
Africa
Helping implement the most recent phase of construction work at Bunyonyi is exactly why I became an engineer. Beth Davies, Happold Foundation Alumni
As a charity we have helped a number of human development projects in Africa. We have worked with our partners to deliver a school and a dormitory for orphans in Lake Bunyonyi, Malawi, and provided Share Our Skills funding for a WaterAid project in Madagascar. Our work in Africa aims to reach some of the most isolated and disadvantaged regions in the world, using engineering to improve quality of life for communities. Find out more about our Human Development projects on our news page.
Asia
Our work in Asia focuses on supporting research and projects that provide vital relief for people who have been affected by natural disasters. Our projects have included funding research by Oxford Brooks University to improve seismic resistance in Nepal following a devastating earthquake, and working with CARE International to improve post-disaster shelter provision in India. “We are excited about having a direct impact on individuals’ lives and leaving behind our knowledge to help the future construction and maintenance of more structures.” Edmund Metters
Central Europe
Working alongside our partners in Europe, we have hosted a number of key events designed to address some of the most challenging issues facing our society. Alongside engineers from BuroHappold’s Berlin office, we hosted design workshop that looked at how we as engineers can provide solutions for the city’s current refugee crisis. We have also supported a number of Happold Scholars from across Europe, helping to fund their studies and gain valuable work experience in the sector.
