In a significant moment for the UK construction industry, structural, civil and building services engineering firms are declaring a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency, and agreeing to work together.
Web sites have been launched to host these declarations, recording firms that join and their commitment. The Happold Foundation is proud to be supporting the establishment and operation of these declaration sites.
Following in the footsteps of the recent ‘Architects Declare’ campaign, ‘UK Engineers Declare’ pledges to set new priorities and develop better ways of working to “meet the needs of our society without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries”.
Dr. Mike Cook, one of the founders of the campaign and partner at BuroHappold Engineering, explains: “There is no doubt that we have passed the point where we can afford to sit on the fence and wait for others. We have to set the pace of change and support the government and our clients in taking the steps to mitigate the climate change and biodiversity emergency that is plain for everyone to see. I am proud to see that engineers are moving with determination and confidence to take seriously their responsibility for the planet and the people who inhabit it.”
Engineering firms operating in the UK can sign up to the building services engineers declare, the structural engineers declare and the civil engineers declare websites. Built environment organisations can now also pledge their support by signing up to the construction declares website.
